Cycling Across Europe for a Future Without Cancer
Cycling Across Europe for a Future Without Cancer is a 23,000-kilometre cycling expedition through 41 European countries, combining adventure, gastronomy, community and cancer prevention awareness.
On 31 May 2026, I left London to begin a journey expected to last more than 20 months before returning to the city where it began.
As I travel across Europe, I am documenting the journey, food traditions and the communities I encounter, while exploring a simple but important question:
How can the way we eat, move and live help us build healthier lives?
Why this journey began
My name is Agis Apostolopoulos.
I am a London-based visual communications designer, storyteller and cyclist.
This journey is dedicated to the memory of my mum, who died from cancer at the age of 66.
More than a cycling expedition
This is not simply a cycle tour around Europe.
It is a moving storytelling and awareness campaign built around three closely connected themes.
Adventure
The reality of travelling across a continent by bicycle, including long roads, changing weather, mechanical problems, remote landscapes, unexpected challenges and the kindness of strangers.
Gastronomy and culture
The recipes, ingredients and traditions that help define communities across Europe.
Food is more than nutrition. It is memory, identity, culture and connection.
Whenever possible, I meet local people, cook traditional dishes with them and listen to the stories behind the food they share.
Health and active living
The journey also creates opportunities to talk about physical activity, diet, body weight and other everyday choices that can influence our long-term health.
Cancer cannot always be prevented, and nobody should ever be blamed for developing it. However, evidence shows that some cancer cases could be prevented through healthier lifestyles and supportive environments.
The purpose of the expedition is to help bring this evidence into ordinary, accessible and human conversations.
Communities at the heart of the journey
Each week, I aim to arrive in a new town, village or city and meet the people who live there.
We may cook together, cycle together or simply sit around a table and talk.
These encounters are at the heart of the expedition because lasting change rarely begins with statistics alone. It begins with people, stories and shared experiences.
In European capital cities, I also connect with local cycling communities and organisations to encourage active living and bring people together around cancer prevention awareness.
Letters to Europe
In every European capital along the route, I create a short reflection called a Letter to Europe.
These films and written stories are not traditional travel guides.
Each capital city becomes a teacher, offering one idea about how we might live healthier, happier and more connected lives.
Brussels spoke about unity.
Amsterdam spoke about everyday movement.
Copenhagen spoke about trust.
Oslo speaks about our relationship with nature.
Together, these letters will form a collection of reflections from across the continent, connected by one cyclist, one journey and one shared hope for the future.
Supporting cancer prevention
The expedition raises awareness of cancer prevention and funds in aid of the World Cancer Research Fund.
The World Cancer Research Fund examines the relationship between cancer risk, diet, nutrition, body weight and physical activity, and provides evidence-based recommendations that people can use in their everyday lives.
The expedition is independently organised by Agis Apostolopoulos. It is not operated by the World Cancer Research Fund.
Two separate ways to support the journey
There are two distinct ways to contribute.
Support the expedition
Contributions made through the expedition’s GoFundMe page help cover the practical costs of completing and documenting the journey.
These may include:
- Bicycle maintenance and repairs
- Safety and camping equipment
- Food and basic accommodation
- Insurance and essential travel costs
- Photography and filming equipment
- Website, editing and production costs
- Community activities and printed awareness materials
These contributions support the expedition itself and are not donations to the World Cancer Research Fund.
Donate in aid of the World Cancer Research Fund
Charitable donations are collected separately through the expedition’s JustGiving page.
These donations are processed for the benefit of the World Cancer Research Fund and do not fund the expedition’s personal or operating costs.
Documenting the journey
The expedition is being shared through:
- Video and photography
- Journal articles
- Social media updates
- Interviews and podcasts
- Community stories
- Recipes and food features
- Capital city reflections
- A planned feature-length documentary
The aim is to create more than a record of the places visited.
It is to create a collection of stories about what connects us, what helps us live well and what kind of future we want to build together.
Join the journey
There are many ways to become part of the expedition.
You can follow and share the journey, join a community ride, offer practical support, share a local recipe, cook with me, introduce the expedition to your community, support the journey or make a charitable donation.
Every shared story, introduction, meal and act of kindness helps carry the journey forward.
For mum.
For everyone we have lost.
For healthier lives, for cancer prevention and for a future without cancer.
